We were delighted with Christie. First, and most importantly, our son made great strides under her guidance. So great, that we felt he no longer needed help! She was incredibly patient and kind with him and our son really responded to her. Christie was also great with me and my wife. She provided thorough and informative updates on our son's progress and which exercises she was using with him, so we could reinforce what she was teaching him. All in all, we had a fabulous experience with Christie and would highly recommend her.

Our experience with Theo was terrific. Theo was great with my son. He developed a positive relationship with him based on sincerity, respect, trust and a deep personal connection. In their lessons, Theo was encouraging, creative and kind. He helped our son understand how to differentiate the sounds he made when he spoke, and gave him great exercises to practice every week between lessons. Our son was sorry to have the lessons come to an end, but recognized that Theo had helped him as much as possible and it was time for him to stop. Theo explained to him (and us) how to keep working to get the last 5%, and encouraged him to keep working on the exercises on his own. I have recommended Theo to another parent who noticed my son's improvement and inquired for her own son.
We are all grateful to have gotten to know Theo, and we greatly appreciate all the work he did to help our son.

Theo is a wonderful Clinton Hill speech therapist. We were really pleased with him. Our son showed drastic improvement, not only in his speech but in his confidence.

Alexa has been an enthusiastic, reliable, well prepared and caring teacher for our 6 year old daughter. She has been able to improve and increase our daughter's confidence lesson by lesson with patience and competence; through varied and productive didactic practice. Alexa has engaged our daughter in several activities that always kept her motivated and eager to learn literacy. My wife and I, both of us are educators, feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to observe Alexa's pedagogical skills. Alexa has had a big impact on our daughter literacy growth. Thank you Brooklyn Letters!

We were absolutely DELIGHTED with Marsha's services. She was wonderful. We found her to be kind, fun, engaging, very knowledgeable. She provided us with clear instructions and additional written handouts each week. She engaged our son with different techniques and toys, and showed us how to use her techniques when we were interacting with him. I actually just texted her on Saturday - Our son finally said "more" - one of the target words we had been working on with her. It was a total joy to hear, and I had to share it with her - she wrote back immediately to congratulate us. I am so appreciative of her expertise, and wish we could have seen her for longer. I recommended her to another family in our neighborhood who is looking for a speech therapist.

Considering Hiring a SEIT Teacher NYC?

👉SEIT Teacher in NYC👈

It is common to see children with learning and attention issues and their parents struggling to keep up with their academic demands. School districts and government agencies can assist with diagnosis, intervention, alterations, and accommodations. Still, there are many instances where a child would require additional assistance in and out of the classroom. It is where a special education itinerant teacher (SEIT) would be beneficial.

What is a SEIT?

A SEIT is a special education professional who offers one-on-one support to students with learning disabilities, behavioral problems, or special education requirements. The SEIT teacher focuses on pre-academic skills, social interaction, and behavior skills to assist the child in the home and/or school setting. The child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is implemented in early childhood programs and at home as part of the SEIT team. The SEIT collaborates with other relevant service providers to implement and plan for the student’s goals.

A SEIT Teacher NYC must provide SEIT programs. It is common for children with hearing impairments to be served by teachers certified in special education or speech and hearing. Still, children with visual disabilities may require an expert in the blind or visually impaired, or those with hearing impairments may need a specialist in deaf education.

A SEIT is a specially educated itinerant teacher employed by an organization licensed by the New York State Education Department to provide special education instruction to children with disabilities in preschools.

Primary General Functions of SEITs:

  • providing direct services- provided to help students become more aware of what is going on in the classroom and improve their cognitive and academic skills
  • providing indirect services- provided to determine the best way to support a child with a learning disability

Roles and Responsibilities of a SEIT:

  • provide educational programs in a preschool classroom or the child’s home
  • help teachers or families create an environment that encourages learning and development in school or at home
  • improve social skills, behavior skills, or pre-academic skills to prepare for school or home success
  • work together with general education teachers and other academic interdisciplinary team members to fulfill the IEP requirements
  • conduct classroom and instructional management for disturbed high school students
  •  to help students with learning disabilities achieve as much academic success as possible, given their disabilities
  • assist the student in achieving their goals by adhering to their Individualized Education Program (IEP)
  • develop, manage, and monitor the child’s behavior management program
  • collaborate with preschool directors and teachers
  • coordinate the child’s educational programs with teachers, therapists, and parents
  • guide and support the child’s family
  • provide indirect/consultation services to the student’s general education professionals to support the student’s progress toward IEP goals
  • work together with other service providers to support students’ learning
  • help students develop the self-regulation and social and emotional skills required to successfully interact with peers and adults
  • complete progress reports and annual reports, and contribute to the development of the IEP

Questions to Ask a SEIT?

  • What worked well today? What difficulties did he/she have?
  • What new skills did you work on together?
  • What can I do to assist my child in becoming more self-sufficient in a specific skill?

Who Receives SEIT Services?

The DOE provides preschool special education services to children aged 3 to 5. Children the Committee on Preschool Special Education recognizes as having a disability are eligible for free preschool special education services.

The CPSE is in charge of coordinating the special education process for preschool children. If the child is determined to be eligible for special education services, the CPSE team will create an Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Top Qualities To Consider When Hiring a SEIT

  • ability to communicate effectively in the classroom
  • ability to adapt to any situation
  • open to improving personally and professionally whenever an opportunity arises
  • can empathize with students with special needs
  • Patient
  • Creative
  • highly organized

What is an IEP?

An IEP lays out a child’s abilities and what DOE services are needed to meet his or her educational requirements. All IEP meetings should include a phone or in-person teacher from the child’s early childhood program to provide information about how the child performs in class.

How can Brooklyn Letters Help?

If a child is classified as a student with a disability, the school, Board of Education, or the child’s therapist may recommend the services of a SEIT. The DOE may provide these services for students, but parents themselves also have the option of seeking the help of a private SEIT.

At Brooklyn Letters, our New York City private SEITs provide support services. These services are not reimbursable by the DOE or by RSAs. Parents pay the SEIT directly.
